Elliott Spohn

I am a storyteller as an artist. I think we all are in some form or fashion, be it with paint, clay, wood, or some other medium. I have been telling stories for over 50 years with paint.

Some stories are short and simple, and others are long and often very complicated. Most of my stories are about the land around me and memories of growing up in the mountains of North Carolina in a small town named Brevard.

Over the years I have experimented a lot with painting and gone down many different paths from extreme realism to complete abstraction and all methods in between. In all cases it is the simple act of painting that keeps bringing me back to the easel.

I graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in fine arts and education. I minored in business and psychology. The psychology studies have played a big role in the way I approach a painting and what I try to glean from it from a personal perspective. Picasso was still alive and working his magic during my formal education. His influence along with my favorite artist, Jackson Pollock, plays a role when I paint in the abstract.

I always come back to the landscape as a way of settling my mind and finding inner peace. Over the years I have developed a unique style with my landscape paintings. They are always simple in content and composition and tell a quiet story.
